Overview[edit]
The Underworld was first mentioned in Lesson 35-10 (NB), and according to Mephistopheles in Lesson 36-5 (NB) is "essentially an enormous pit in the shape of a bowl" that houses imprisoned sinners. There are nine circles to the Underworld, and the location is likely based on Dante's Inferno. As first mentioned in Lesson 37-1 (NB), the Underworld "belongs to" and is under the jurisdiction of the Celestial Realm.
Mephistopheles also mentioned in Lesson 36-5 (NB) that the Underworld connects to the Human World, though the way is long and treacherous. The only human that he knew of that walked from the Human World to the Underworld and back was Solomon.
Inhabitants[edit]
- Giants (Lesson 37-1 (NB))
- Mephistopheles mentioned these giants reside on the eighth layer.
- Sinners (Lesson 36-5 (NB))
- What exactly Mephistopheles meant when he said that the Underworld houses "sinners" has not yet been explained.
Known Locations[edit]
- City of Dis (Lesson 36-5 (NB))
- Cocytus (Lesson 36-14 (NB))
- The lowest and ninth level of the Underworld. It is subdivided into four concentric circles that are each their own region, according to Simeon in Lesson 37-7 (NB).
- Caina is the topmost circle of Cocytus, where "traitors to their kindred" are punished.
- Antenora is the second circle of Cocytus, where "traitors to their homeland" are punished.
- Ptolomaea is the third circle of Cocytus, where "traitors to their guests" are punished.
- Judecca is the fourth circle of Cocytus, where "traitors to 'him'" are punished.
- River of Lamentation (Lesson 36-14 (NB))
- This river seems to be a part of all four circles of Cocytus.
History[edit]
The deepest part of the first level is where Minos, Judge of the Damned resides, according to Solomon in Lesson 36-5 (NB). Solomon also commented that he once played a game of chess against him.
While this was not the case at the time of Solomon's visit, according to both Solomon in Lesson 36-5 (NB) and Mephistopheles in Lesson 37-1 (NB), the majority of the Underworld has over time been turned into tourist locations and sightseeing destinations. This is not true of the ninth and lowest layer — Cocytus — and only a "select few" even know this ninth layer exists.
Government[edit]
Laws[edit]
As explained in Lesson 38 (NB), if an individual commits a crime and is thought to pose a threat to all three worlds, the Celestial Realm, the Devildom, and the Human World have an agreement that such a person may be sealed inside Cocytus, the Underworld's ninth circle. This imprisonment requires the consent of at least two representatives from each of the three worlds.
Geography[edit]
The Underworld is comprised of nine main "layers" of concentric circles, with each circle being one level deeper than the last. Many of the main layers are also further divided into concentric circles. Each of the nine layers have progressively "more grievous" sinners, as Mephistopheles explained in Lesson 36-5 (NB).
