Overview[edit]

The Great Celestial War is the name given to the war between a still angelic Lucifer, his brothers who allied with him, and their father. The exact date of the Great Celestial War is uncertain, though it must have occurred at minimum several thousand years before MC arrived as an exchange student in Devildom, given Satan's age and the fact that his creation happened after the war.

Story[edit]

The Inciting Incident[edit]

The Great Celestial War was first spoken of by Beelzebub in Lesson 6-1 (OM). He explained to MC that he and his brothers were originally angels that lived in the Celestial Realm. He also told MC about their youngest sister, Lilith.

In Lesson 15-2 (OM), Lucifer told MC that when he was still an angel, Belphegor loved humans and would often sneak down to the Human World. His interest inspired Lilith to be interested as well, and she too begin making her own trips down to the Human World. Due to these Human World visits, Lilith eventually met and fell in love with a human man. She kept secret from him that she was an angel, and also tried to keep secret her relationship with him, though after some time, Lucifer and her brothers found out.

In Lesson 15-4 (OM), Lucifer told MC the man Lilith loved "was stricken with an incurable illness." Desperate to save him, Lilith gave the man forbidden food from the Celestial Realm. This altering of a human's lifespan was a forbidden act, and somehow, their father found out about it. To punish Lilith, their father sentenced her to be "wiped from existence." Of course, Lucifer and his brothers refused to just let that happen.

The Battle[edit]

As Beelzebub explained in Lesson 6-1 (OM), Lucifer "incited a revolution against [their] father." The angels who followed their father fought against those who followed Lucifer, with this event later becoming known as the Great Celestial War. Beelzebub also told MC that during the battle, he saw angels "draw their bows and aim for both Lilith and Belphie." Unable to save them both, Beelzebub chose to save Belphegor, and so Lilith's wing was pierced by an arrow.

Lilith then "fell down out of the heavens" and down into the Devildom. Because her injuries had been severe, most of the brothers believed Lilith died after her fall. Ultimately, their father "crushed [the brothers'] rebellion, and cast [them] out of the Celestial Realm."

The Aftermath[edit]

Instead of dying, Lilith fell into the Devildom, where Lucifer followed. The two were then found by Diavolo and Barbatos, as first shown in Lesson 14-10 (OM). Lilith was close to death, Lucifer — who was now a demon — begged Diavolo to save her. Diavolo did save Lilith, despite the great risk to the Devildom this choice of interfering with Celestial Realm judgement was. In return, Lucifer "swore [his] allegiance to [Diavolo] for all eternity," as he explained in Lesson 15-7 (OM).

Diavolo then ensured that Lilith was reborn as a human, though she lost all memory of her former life as an angel. Lucifer kept Lilith's survival a secret from his brothers, because they were all "prohibited from coming in contact with the human Lilith." This was because she'd been sentenced to death, so the Celestial Realm could not find out she had actually survived.

Lilith was not the only being to be created anew after the war. Up to this point, Satan did not yet exist, but as he told MC in Lesson 9-7 (OM), he was "born from Lucifer himself." In the Devilgram The Search for Self, Satan further explained that he and Lucifer used to be the same being. However, in the aftermath of the Great Celestial War, Lucifer "cut off his own wings—all six of them." Then, a "burning, unstoppable rage erupted from within Lucifer, splitting off from him." That part that split off was Satan.

After the war, Lucifer and and all his brothers who followed him had now become demons. Along with Satan, the seven of them were given their titles from "first-born" to "seventh-born" by the Demon King himself, as Satan told MC in Lesson 9-7 (OM). From this point forward, they would continue their lives as demons in the Devildom.
