The Main Character (aka MC) is the human protagonist of both Obey Me! and Nightbringer. Their default name is Yuki in English, and Ibuki (伊吹) in Japanese. However, the player can change this name — alongside their birth date — at the start of both games. MC is a distinctly different character than Zephyr, the protagonist of Obey Me! The Comic.

Appearance[edit]

Although MC's physical appearance completely depends on the player, the demon brothers have noted that they are kind of cute and hard to dislike.(source?) In Lesson 2-15 (OM), it is implied that they are taller than Luke, given that they bend down to talk to him. Asmodeus provided a few of MC's features in Lesson 8-15 (OM), such as their ring fingers being longer than their index fingers, and their ears being on the small side.

Starting in Lesson 45 (OM) and continuing to evolve through later Lessons, on the back of MC's hand is a magic seal of three staves and seven stars, which is the crest of the Sorcerers' Society.

Personality[edit]

MC's personality is determined by the responses and actions they make during the Main Story, Event stories, chats, and calls. However, MC is often considered nosy due to their tendency to get into matters that, at face value, appear to have nothing to do with them.(source?)

Mammon once lamented during Lesson 16-A (OM) that MC "may seem like someone who's really got it together", but has a "boneheaded streak", and that they can be "super reckless...and too damn gutsy." All of the brothers saw a resemblance between MC and the protagonist of a zombie movie in Lesson 41-16 Hard (OM). This was because said protagonist was also reckless, placed the safety of others above their own, and spent lots of energy trying to fix their friends' problems.

In Lesson 4-15 (OM), Lucifer commented that MC seems to be "the type of person that has trouble lying."

In the chat Lend Me Your Textbook, Beelzebub mentioned that MC always keeps their room clean.

MC has gotten detention at RAD at least twice. Their first detention was in Lesson 71-19 (OM) after being very late to class. They also served detention in the Devilgram Meet Me After School for talking to Asmodeus in the middle of class.

Talents and Skills[edit]

  • MC does well at card games, as implied in Lesson 17-7 (OM).
    • MC had the option to downplay it, but if they did, Belphegor believed they only did so because they felt sorry for him.
    • This skill may have to do with their pact with Mammon granting them amazing luck.

Powers and Abilities[edit]

After Lesson 20 (OM), the power of MC's magic increased from those of an average human, to possessing a raw power surpassing even Solomon's magical abilities. However, as explained in Lesson 37 (OM), MC being a human with a distant angel ancestor, and having pacts with all seven demon brothers, gives them a connection to all three worlds, which created a kind of "ring" that greatly enhances their magical powers. These powers were initially beyond MC's control, and only by wearing the Ring of Light — given to them by Simeon in Lesson 38 (OM) — were they able to keep their magic from unintentionally having a negative effect on all three worlds.

This boost in magical power can be seen in how the brothers are effected when MC invokes their pacts. Initially, it did not appear that MC's use of their pact was unusually strong. The first time MC told a demon to "stay!" was with Mammon in Lesson 2-12 (OM). Doing so caused Mammon to be magically held in place, and to use MC's proper name rather than calling them "human," but nothing more.

After MC has a pact with all seven brothers, however, the effect of using their pact seems much more severe. An example of this is in Lesson 26-15 (OM), when MC used the magic of their pacts with six of the brothers all at the same time. Not only were all of the brothers "pinned against the ground" as Satan described it, but Beelzebub afterward complained that his "entire body hurts every time [he] moves." Asmodeus also stated that he had bruises from the incident.

The change in the pact's effect does not seem to be intentional on MC's part, especially considering their actions that invoked the pact magic in Lesson 22-15 (OM) were the same as their first use of it with Mammon in Lesson 2-12 (OM). Instead, it seems likely MC's overwhelming boost in magical power — due to the "ring" created by their connection to all three worlds — means controlling the amount of power they use when accessing their magic is much more difficult, both pact magic and otherwise.

MC's boost in magical power is not the only side effect of having pacts. In Lesson 35-6 (NB), Belphegor brought up that Mammon's greed powers grant "amazing luck" to any human that has a pact with him. This was apparently proven both when MC then won a travel voucher for two in the same lesson, and when they earlier won the Devildom lottery in Lesson 23 (NB).

MC also had amazing luck with money in the Devilgram Seven Rulers of Hell (Mammon). When gambling with a single coin that Mammon gave them, they eventually went from one coin to 50,000.

After spending time training with Solomon to become a sorcerer, and then earning their full-fledged license from the Sorcerers' Society, MC became capable of performing some simpler magics without the use of any incantation. An example of this was in Lesson 59-1 (OM), when MC levitated a napkin to wipe Beelzebub's mouth.

In the Devilgram The Magic Music Festival, MC has the ability to teleport themselves and Asmodeus to a town that they only know the name of.

Story[edit]

Background[edit]

The majority of MC's background remains unspecified, with the only backstory being that they were picked randomly by Lucifer to be part of the exchange program at RAD.(source?) Despite having signed a a letter of acceptance confirming their participation from, they were still confused at appearing suddenly within the Devildom's student council hall in Lesson 1-1 (OM).

While Lilith was eventually revealed to be MC's distant ancestor(source?), neither they nor Lilith are genetically related to any of the seven brothers, by blood or otherwise. This is because — as angels that were created, not born — none of the brothers are related by blood to begin with. The brothers choose to see their relationships to each other as just that: brothers. This is also why Satan is considered one of the seven "brothers" despite the history of his creation.

Main Story and Events[edit]

In Obey Me!, the chronological order of the demon brothers making pacts with MC from is as follows: Mammon in Lesson 2-8, Leviathan in Lesson 4-6, Beelzebub in Lesson 6-10, Asmodeus in Lesson 8-15, Satan in Lesson 12-10, Belphegor in Lesson 18-19, and finally Lucifer in Lesson 20-14.

In Lesson 38-17 (OM), MC was given the Ring of Light in order to better control their magical powers and connection to all three worlds. With it in their possession, they rank alongside Solomon as one of the most powerful human sorcerers in existence.

In Lesson 41 (OM), MC was revealed to be studying the magical arts with Solomon serving as their teacher. From Lesson 45 (OM) onward, MC underwent seven trials to earn their sorcerer's license. By the end of Lesson 58 (OM), MC officially became a sorcerer, though they remained under Solomon's apprenticeship.

MC has so far developed kemonomini traits three separate times. The first was in the Pop Quiz We're All Bad Here, where they developed bunny ears after eating one of Simeon's cookies. The second was when MC has the choice of being a dog or rabbit as a game avatar in the Devilgram Animal Game. The third was in Lesson 53 (OM), when MC was magically given a sheep's tail to play the game "Tail Thieves."

Trivia[edit]

  • This is the first Shall We Date game where the MC isn't exclusively female.
    • Depending on the player, MC may be any gender, and is identified in-game using they/them pronouns.
  • In the first draft of the game, MC was originally a high school student employed to babysit the seven brothers (under the guise of humans) at the House of Lamentation in the Human World.
    • In Lesson 41 (OM), this plot was reused as a cover concocted by the brothers (mostly by Mammon and Asmodeus) to surprise MC when they were staying in the Human World during their vacation.
    • In this draft, MC was also written as female.
    • MC also would've had a mother who's an artist, and one of her art pieces was in Diavolo's possession.
  • MC appears in the card art for Another Cat Person as a cat.
    • This is the first time MC has appeared on any card.
