Barbatos
"The impeccable butler who follows Diavolo around as if he were his shadow. His ability is to see both the past and the future."
— Barbatos's Student ID
Barbatos is a demon whose first appearance in Obey Me!'s Main Story was in Lesson 2-13. He serves as a butler to Diavolo — a job he takes very seriously — and is completely loyal to him. While he is considered a side character in Obey Me!, Barbatos was added to the game's Intimacy system in December of 2020 as part of the Happy Devil Day celebration.
Appearance[edit]
Barbatos has short, kombu green hair styled such that he has a longer fringe on his left side which fades into a turquoise color at the tips, and bangs that reach his eyebrows. He has pale skin, and his eyes are a gradient of dark forest green and yellow-green. He regularly wears a pair of white gloves, but when without them, it can be seen that his nails are painted royal purple.
As seen in the official height chart, Barbatos is the third-tallest of the side characters, just barely taller than Simeon.
RAD Uniform
Barbatos's RAD Uniform is different in style than the typical charcoal grey jacket, which is instead a tailcoat with six gold buttons and gold accents. His pants are the standard matching charcoal color with red stripes along the sides, but he wears a white cummerbund in place of a belt.
He has the standard teal shirt beneath his jacket paired with an forest green tie, and he wears a pair of white gloves. Barbatos's demon look was first revealed in Lesson 14-10 of the Main Story. In this form, Barbatos has a pair of small, black horns that look similar to the "fingers" of bat-like wings. Each horn has four "fingers" and one shorter "thumb" ending in a small spike.
Barbatos also has a long, twin-tipped tail with a gradient of black at the base and aquamarine green at each of the tail ends. There is also a lightning pattern of aquamarine green that runs along the length of his tail. According to Issue 5 of the RAD Newspaper, Barbatos's tail is "wet and glistening, but not slimy."
As with Satan, Barbatos has no visible markings in his demon form.
Barbatos's outfit when in demon form consists of a black tailcoat with gold buttons and a high collar with a decorative gold chain. It has a geometric pattern of black and grey triangles on the front with a white border, and many of the coat's edges are bordered in white. There is also a white pattern on the back of the coat vaguely shaped like an hourglass. The coat has an aquamarine green underside, and both the sleeves and right shoulder have decorative ruffles colored a gradient of teal green and black. Barbatos's pants are charcoal grey with black stripes along the sides, and he wears black boots with short, flat heels. He also wears a pair of white gloves.

Barbatos was first seen in his Human World look in Lesson 48-19 of the Main Story. The outfit is likely inspired by the changshan, and consists of an aquamarine green and deep teal green gradient top with a standing collar, and is long enough to nearly reach Barbatos's knees. The right shoulder of the top is white, and wrapping around the bottom-left side of the top is fabric with a geometric triangle pattern in shades of orange and brown. Worn over the top is a robe-like garment that is a gradient of charcoal grey at the top and aquamarine green at the bottom. The lining is also aquamarine green, and there are decorative aqua blue accents on each of the wide sleeves with dangling earth tone colored beads attached.
His pants also have gradient colors, being charcoal grey at the waist and jade grey at the ankles, and have decorative carmine red laces along the outseams on his lower legs. His shoes are dark grey with aqua blue soles. Barbatos wears two necklaces; one fully beaded, and the other having a circular white pendant danging from a jade green cord. There is also what appears to be a yellow and black Chinese knot hanging from the lower left side of Barbatos's top, though it is mostly hidden by the outer robe.

Barbatos has a very calm demeanor, although he does enjoy lightly teasing other people.(source?) He is nice towards MC and often saves leftover sweets he bakes for them.(source?) He takes his position as a butler very seriously, and even taught the demon brothers intricacies about his job in the Demon de Butler Pop Quiz. The demon brothers believe that Barbatos could do anything, thus resulting in them frequently seeking out his help.(source?)
While typically exuding a calm demeanor, Barbatos seems to dislike being interrupted when speaking about something he is passionate about, even going so far as to throw a fork at Mammon's head for speaking over him.(source?) According to Little D. No. 2, Barbatos's smile remains in place even when he is angry.(source?) Some of the demon brothers think that Barbatos is shady and scary. Mammon in particular is convinced that Barbatos has a hidden room in the Demon Lord's Castle where he partakes in the act of torturing people, as he brings up in Lesson 6-19 (OM).
Barbatos has many talents, but he's best known for his cooking skills. According to Luke, Barbatos is the greatest pastry chef in all of the three worlds.(source?) As in all things, Barbatos takes cooking very seriously, and will go to greater lengths than most to achieve perfection. This is evident when he mentioned to MC in the Devilgram The Secret Dish that he visits the local port market three times a day to purchase ingredients.
Barbatos also has a talent for dancing, which includes dancing to club music. This surprised Asmodeus in Lesson 40-15 (OM), where he declared Barbatos an excellent dancer after having seen his moves at The Fall.
Despite appearing perfect at nearly everything, Barbatos has a great deal of difficulty as an actor in the Devilgram Just Be Yourself!, as he has never acted before.
In one of his dialogues when given Revelation Tomatoes, Barbatos mentioned occasionally supervising fan club meetings for the student council members. Asmodeus confirmed this when also given Revelation Tomatoes, saying that Barbatos showed up to one of his fan club's meetups.
Lucifer describes him as a demon of elite status.(source?)
In the chat Wakeup Shakeup 1, Diavolo explained that it is difficult to pull pranks on Barbatos because he always wakes up before anyone else does.
Preferences[edit]
Likes[edit]
- In the chat Surprising Taste, Barbatos stated that he likes heavy metal music.
- Barbatos is a lover of tea, and according to Diavolo in the Devilgram A Fellow Tea Enthusiast, Barbatos is a "walking tea encyclopedia."
- His group chat with Lucifer is called Tea Demons.
- Barbatos enjoys rare kinds of tea, particularly herbal tea, and he's also interested in herbs in general.(source?)
- In the chat Tea Demons Spilling the Tea, Barbatos recommended tea leaves that have been grown in exceptionally low temperatures because it adds depth to the flavor.
- He mentioned in the Devilgram Let's Go Stargazing! that he enjoys taking walks at night.
- According to his RAD Newspaper Club birthday feature, he prefers cats over dogs.
- In the chat The Necktie, it was revealed that Barbatos likes the colors burgundy and indigo.
- He likes indigo because he can wear it on a day-to-day basis.
- Barbatos likes cherry blossoms, especially the way they look at night, due to their "unique ephemerality," as he explained in the Devilgram Our Private Wonderland.
- In the chat A New Hobby, Barbatos mentioned his interest in tiny cooking.
Dislikes[edit]
- Beelzebub mentioned in the chat Barbatos's Weakness that Barbatos does not like rats.
- In the chat What's Going On?, Asmodeus sent a photo of Barbatos "frozen in fear" upon finding a rat at the House of Lamentation.
- One of Barbatos's phone calls is also associated with rats.
- In the Devilgram All Because of That, Barbatos referred to the rat as a "you-know-what," and said hearing the name makes his skin crawl.
- Barbatos told MC in the chat The Fragrance of Tea that due to the nature of his job, he's never had much interest or desire to wear perfume.
- In the chat An Irresistible Tail 2, it was implied that Barbatos usually does not like when people touch his tail.
- Barbatos does not like sitting around and doing nothing. As he told MC in the Devilgram A Fun-Filled Day Off, doing such would "go against [his] very being."
- According to the chat Cute Barbatos, Barbatos was once provoked into fighting a witch after she called him a cutie.

Powers and Abilities[edit]
In Lesson 15-17 (OM), Barbatos explained to MC that he has the ability to see into the past and the future, and can send people to either one using the countless doors in his room. When either he or another visits the past, they cannot reveal that they are from the future, as doing so could warp history. This is also why it's important to avoid meeting one's past self. Diavolo forbids Barbatos from using his powers freely, and in Lesson 34-B (OM), Barbatos told Lucifer that he only uses his ability to see the future when Diavolo specifically asks him to.
In Lesson 16-19 (OM), Barbatos also explained that he can choose from any number of potential realities and make his choice the sole reality. This is the reason why there were briefly two MC's in the same timeline, and why the timeline where Belphegor nearly killed MC ceased to exist.
Story[edit]
Background[edit]
Barbatos mentions in the chat That's What I Mean that he was never a child. He has the power to see the past and the future, and is able to choose from multiple realities whichever one he prefers to become the sole reality.(source?) He can accomplish these feats by opening doorways to any time and place, including the Human World and the Celestial Realm.(source?) Diavolo expressly forbids him from using his power freely.(source?)
Solomon tells MC In Lesson 9-14 Hard (NB) that Barbatos had made a pact with him before he started serving Diavolo.
In Lesson 16-2 (NB), Satan found a guidebook on the Fountain of Knowledge that seemed to refer to both Solomon and Barbatos. The book stated that a sorcerer of "rare and extraordinary power" eventually lost control of said power and caused tremendous destruction to the Human World. Because he was potentially a threat to all three worlds, a demon that was likely Barbatos approached him and offered him guidance. The sorcerer was then made the guardian of the Fountain of Knowledge.
He admits to MC in The Legendary Dame Devilgram that he was once a Dame at Queen Rose's banquet. He was considered so beautiful that it caused an uproar, and piles of fan mail was delivered daily to the Demon Lord's Castle. From then onward, he swore to never be a Dame again.
In the Wanderers' Whereabouts video Impeccable Service, when asked whether or not he has a Little D. counterpart to himself, Barbatos purposely evaded answering the question.
Obey Me!'s Main Story[edit]
Lessons 1-20[edit]
Lesson 2[edit]
In Lesson 2-A, it is revealed that Barbatos is in a pact with Solomon.
The day after MC makes a pact with Mammon, MC meets Barbatos for the first time while he comments on how students seem obsessed with rumors but could care less about official announcements they make. He compliments Lord Diavolo on his choice to bring MC in as an exchange student when Lucifer and Diavolo start discussing the recent pact. He then introduces himself as Lord Diavolo's steward and apologizes for not introducing himself sooner. Lucifer states that he is a smart and talented individual and suggests that he would make a better brother than Mammon, but Barbatos attempts to compliment Mammon instead.
He breaks up the teasing of Luke by alerting everyone to the fact that the first bell will ring soon before leaving with Diavolo, Lucifer, and Simeon.
Lesson 7[edit]
At the Demon Lord's Castle, Barbatos and Diavolo welcome everyone to the exchange party. He is tasked with explaining the plan for the retreat, telling everyone that the first day would be about Devildom history and cuisine, the second day would have a scavenger hunt a Celestial Realm cuisine, and the final day would have a dance and Human World cuisine. He then announces the room assignments for everyone during the retreat; Diavolo with Lucifer, Luke with Beelzebub and Leviathan, Simeon with Asmodeus and MC, and Solomon with Mammon and Satan. He manages to ignore all of the added commentary for everyone during his explanation.
Barbatos is not able to join everyone else for the castle tour portion of the retreat. Diavolo tells everyone he has some student council business to attend to instead. When the missing party returns, Barbatos has as well and has prepared a special Devildom dinner for everyone.
Lesson 8[edit]
After the events of the second night, Barbatos catches Satan eavesdropping on a conversation between Diavolo and Lucifer by the lake outside the castle. He explains that it is his job to be near his master, but inquires about Satan's intentions being there. Satan asks him for his opinion about the conversation they overheard, and on how MC does not seem to be an average human, citing that not just anyone can make so many pacts with strong demons. Barbatos vaguely answers that even if it wasn't Diavolo's plan to choose such a person, it might have been inevitable, and then sends Satan off to bed.
The next afternoon, everyone wakes up late from their eventful night and enjoys a brunch of Human World food prepared by MC, Solomon, and Barbatos. They quickly learn that Solomon's cooking is very unique, in such a way that everyone finds it disgusting. This marks the end of the retreat.

Lessons 41-60[edit]
In Lessons 49-A, Barbatos admits to making his pact with Solomon before the sorcerer had his pact with Asmodeus. Through the use of his powers, he also knew that Solomon would form a pact with Asmodeus before it actually happened. He's the only demon currently known to have pacts with other humans, but not with MC.
In Lesson 53, Solomon reveals that he possesses Barbatos's grimoire, which Barbatos says he trusted Solomon with of his own free will. In Lessons 54, whether Barbatos actually gave Solomon his grimoire or not is put into question when he admits the grimoire given to MC was a fake.

It seems Barbatos and Lucifer have mutual respect for one another, although Barbatos occasionally jokes about Lucifer. In some instances, he is shown being concerned over Lucifer's well-being. When Diavolo requested that Lucifer doesn't work himself too hard, Barbatos agrees with Diavolo's statement and presents an image MC took of Lucifer, overworked, to help Diavolo persuade Lucifer to get some sleep.

Obey Me![edit]
According to Barbatos in Lesson 58-A, he became Diavolo's butler after Diavolo lured him into the Demon Lord's Castle with the promise of rare cheshire cat grass tea. He then told Barbatos that he he'd not allow him to leave until he agreed to be his butler. When reminiscing on these events, Diavolo asked if Barbatos is still upset over that, and he answered that of course he wasn't, because everything he did, he did of his own free will. To this day, he remains Diavolo's butler because that is what he wants to do.
Barbatos is very loyal to Diavolo, and wishes to serve him well. Diavolo has complained that sometimes Barbatos is too harsh on him, but the demon brothers describe him as overprotective of Diavolo.
He also shows extreme patience for Diavolo, as evidenced in The Fantastic Three(3) chatroom interactions. He is usually calm and collected and agrees with almost everything Diavolo says.
In the chat Cleaning 2, Barbatos objects to Diavolo's idea of getting a cleaning robot for the Demon Lord's Castle, explaining that looking after Diavolo himself brings him joy.
Barbatos will, at times, inconvenience himself so that Diavolo is happy. For example, in the chat High in Demand, Barbatos explains that he would prefer to decline an invitation to appear on a quiz show in order to focus on his duties. However, he considers accepting the invitation just to see the look of delight on Diavolo's face.
