"Raphael acts calmly when interacting with others, but it is said that when he's holding a spear, he can be even scarier than a demon. He respects Lucifer and Michael."
— Raphael's Introduction video
Raphael is an angel who was first mentioned in Obey Me!'s Main Story in Lesson 44-3, and made his first proper appearance in Lesson 63-1. His first appearance in Nightbringer's Main Story was Lesson 17-17. He is often given tasks and errands by Michael, which he dutifully puts up with. He is considered a side character in both Obey Me! and Nightbringer, meaning that he is not currently included in either game's Intimacy system.
Appearance[edit]
Raphael has short, ash blond hair with layered bangs. He has beige skin, and his eyes are a gradient of royal blue and celeste blue, with a ring of amethyst purple around his pupils.
It is implied that he has a form with wings, as in Lesson 44-7 (OM), it was mentioned that Mammon once tried selling pigeon feathers from the Human World by pretending that they came from Raphael.
Angel Look
Like Luke and Simeon, instead of wearing the standard RAD Uniform, Raphael wears his Celestial Realm clothes. The outfit consists of a tight-fitting, sleeveless black crop top with gold borders and diamond accents, under which appears to be a dark cerulean blue garment also having a gold border.
Over the black top is an equally sleeveless white jacket with gold trim and dark cerulean blue lining. Wrapped around the jacket's collar is a wide black trim layered under a gradient-colored celadon blue and golden yellow trim cut such that both the trim's fabric and the trim's negative space are shaped like the stylized spear shapes of spades. His lower arms and the back of his hands are covered by a skintight black fabric, over which is a pair of detached white cuffs with gold trim and wide openings.
His pants are black and white, with the front white section bordered in gold and having two sets of three gold diamonds. The lowest diamond of each set has an attached gold-colored tassel. He also has a hair accessory made of several connected gold diamonds, and the charm on his black choker necklace is made of four celadon blue diamonds arranged to form a larger diamond shape.Like Luke and Simeon, instead of wearing the standard RAD Uniform, Raphael wears his Celestial Realm clothes. Raphael is less talkative than most, to the point that Luke commented in Lesson 65-14 (OM) that it's often difficult to understand what Raphael is thinking because he "doesn't talk much." He seems to prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, as in Lesson 67-17 (OM) — when MC was tasked with playing hide-and-seek — Lucifer suggested they might find Raphael by looking "somewhere quiet."
Though Raphael typically has a calm demeanor, for an angel, he is surprisingly quick to resort to violence, or at least threats of such. When Beelzebub started chewing on Luke's clothes in Lesson 67 (OM), Raphael responded by offering to rain spears down on Beelzebub. Raining down spears seems to be Raphael's default conflict resolution method, as alluded to in the chat The Laundry Machine 1. When Luke panicked about their broken washing machine, Raphael rained spears down upon the machine to prevent it from overflowing.
Raphael has a more serious personality, and typically has no interest in "frivolous" activities like playing games, and protested that he was "not a child" when tasked with playing hide-and-seek in Lesson 67 (OM). He also frequently declined the brothers' pleas to play with them in the past when they were still angels.(source?) He doesn't smile often, but on the rare occasions he does, he's said to have a lovely smile.(source?)
He has often been described by the seven brothers as being extremely strict.(source?) When the brothers still lived in the Celestial Realm, they often worried about saying the wrong thing and having Raphael overhear them.(source?) He is also a dutiful individual, and Simeon commented in Lesson 69-9 (OM) that he is an "early to bed, early to rise" type.
Raphael is able to keep calm and avoid panicking in chaotic situations, though getting angry is a different story. In the Devilgram All Aboard, he was able to keep a level head when the airship he was aboard made for a RAD school project accidentally took to the sky. However, he did get upset if MC's guidance led to the airship flying too close to the Colosseum's roof.
When MC asked Raphael about his cooking abilities in Lesson 71 (OM), Simeon described it as "something it's better not to know." In Lesson 71-16 Hard (OM), it was revealed that his cooking isn't actually terrible, but with more complex recipes, Raphael is highly prone to creating chaos in the kitchen.
Raphael "can generally hold his liquor" according to Lucifer, but gets very sleepy when drunk, as seen in the Devilgram Raphael's Welcome, where he passed out mid-sentence after drinking a few bottles of Demonus.
He tends to ignore nonverbal cues, frequently saying that a character "didn't say anything" when one's mood is inferred by facial expression or context clues.(source?) An example of his seeming inability to read the room can be seen in the Happy Birthday! Dear Simeon '22 event, where he appeared clueless about the other characters' nervousness over Solomon wanting to borrow and use some cooking utensils. He also seemed unaware of others' disdain for Solomon's food in Lesson 69-11 (OM). Raphael can also be very oblivious to his surroundings in general, such as when he didn't notice at first that his hands had caught on fire in Lesson 68-11 (OM).
Preferences[edit]
Likes[edit]
- Raphael often likes food with flavoring either too strong or too strange for most people.
- This includes Solomon's cooking, as mentioned in his character introduction video, and demonstrated in Lesson 69-11 (OM).
- He also was seen to enjoy Death's Door hot sauce in the Devilgram Raphael's Welcome.
- Raphael likes Café Lament's drink Shadow Gecko Liver Milk Tea - despite it being considered a "bizarro drink" - as mentioned in Lessons 79-16 (OM and 55-10 (NB).
- According to the chat An Appreciated Gift, Raphael was gifted a Zombie Iguana keychain from Luke, and this is where he keeps all his important keys.
- Raphael is a big fan of Fangol, and in particular the "Steel Falcons" team.
- As mentioned in the chat Raphael Versus Luke!, after the Ultra Bowl completed, he frequently discussed the Falcons with Mammon and Beelzebub.
- In the chat Dogs or Cats?, Raphael stated that while he doesn't mind dogs, he prefers cats and considers himself a cat person.
Dislikes[edit]
- Raphael dislikes any foods that look off-putting or unappetizing.
- He expressed disgust and confusion in the Devilgram Raphael's Welcome at the unappetizing appearance of most Devildom foods.
- In Lesson 52-9 (NB), it was revealed that Raphael dislikes Ferris wheels. Simeon explained that Raphael "finds the feeling of the ground moving to be scary," though Raphael denied that.
- He dislikes being ignored, and though he didn't say anything, he was clearly upset after Solomon told MC and Satan to "just pretend he's not [there]" in Lesson 75-7 (OM).
- As he mentioned in the chat Tiny Devil Sighting 1, he may decide to smite someone with spears if he believes they are ignoring him.
Talents and Skills[edit]
- Raphael has a talent for sewing, likely helped by Lucifer's observation that he has an eye for detail, as he mentioned in the Devilgram Raphael's Welcome.
- It was also mentioned in the same Devilgram that when the brothers lived in the Celestial Realm, they would often tear their clothing when escaping Lucifer's punishments. Raphael would mend the rips, and eventually began to enjoy sewing.
- In Lesson 69-A (OM), Raphael was quick to notice that MC's sleeve was damaged, and mended it for them with great skill.
- Raphael is a highly talented singer.
- According to Simeon, in the Devilgram Memorable World, Raphael is "the most celebrated vocalist in all the Celestial Realm."
- Asmodeus mentioned in Lesson 67-16 Hard (OM) that he and Belphegor used to beg Raphael to sing for them, which he often agreed to do.
- Raphael is a very talented fighter.
- He demonstrated in the Devilgram Kung Fu Action! having skills in kung fu that he learned just from watching movies.
- In the same Devilgram, instead of dodging as asked, Raphael countered Satan's mock attack, then apologized and said "it was reflexive" for him.
- Luke mentioned in Lesson 76-2 (OM) that Raphael has lots of experience mixing potions, and called his abilities "amazing."
- In some cases, however, his angelic powers can interfere with his potion-making.
Powers and Abilities[edit]
Presumably Raphael doesn't carry around an arsenal of spears on his person, and yet he is known for "raining down spears" on anyone or anything that he feels warrants said action.(source?) This likely means that he is capable of using magic to create or summon multiple spears at will.
Raphael's angelic powers are so strong that they can sometimes influence the magical potions he creates. During an applied magical potions class in Lesson 76-7 (OM), he attempted to make "nectar of Eve's apple" — a potion with the power to seduce anyone — but instead created a potion that "purified the heart." Drinking the potion caused Mammon to want to give away all his money.
Story[edit]
Background[edit]
As mentioned by Luke in Lesson 17-1 (NB), Raphael is the youngest angel to ever earn the rank of Seraph.
Back when the seven brothers were angels, he frequently had an antagonistic relationship with them. In Lesson 44-3 (OM), a still angelic Asmodeus had snuck away to his first party, and had to hide from Raphael afterwards to avoid punishment. Mammon warned him that he'd seen Raphael looking for him, and "had his spear on him." This was his usual weapon, and Leviathan, Mammon, and Asmodeus have all testified that Raphael used to punish them by raining spears down upon them when they were angels.(source?)
In Lesson 67-9 (OM), Asmodeus mentioned that they would often ask Raphael to play games with them, but Raphael would always refuse, saying "if you have time to play, then you have time to pray." However, there were also times when he and at least some of the brothers would get along. Asmodeus also mentioned in Lesson 67-16 Hard (OM) that he and Belphegor used to beg Raphael to sing for them, which he often agreed to do.
Obey Me!'s Main Story[edit]
Lessons 61-70[edit]
Lesson 60[edit]
While his appearance wasn't shown, at the end of Lesson 60-22, Raphael visited Simeon in the Human World at his and Luke's café, The Angel's Halo.
Lesson 65[edit]
Beginning in Lesson 65, Raphael spent time living in the Devildom as an exchange student with Luke, Simeon, and Solomon in Purgatory Hall. His room is the former guest room, which had previously been used as storage by Leviathan.

Obey Me![edit]
Raphael seemed less than impressed with MC when they first met, especially if MC wrongly guessed that he was Michael in Lesson 65-6. However, he did notice MC's fraying sleeve in Lesson 69-A, and had them hold out their arm so he could fix it for them. Later in Lesson 74, after falling into an enchanted sleep that MC had to help him escape from, he also apologized to them for being "a real burden."
If MC wished to "borrow someone's Devildom Law textbook" in Lesson 77-15, they returned Raphael's student handbook to him, which he insisted on thanking them for. This led to him sharing his Devildom Law textbook book with MC, and because he'd written in the book to the point that it was hard to read, also insisted MC sit "super close" to him, according to a flustered Leviathan.
In the Devilgram The RAD Vampire Club!, Raphael found it amusing to tease MC by joking about having an interest in trying out faux blood-sucking on them.

Mammon[edit]

Obey Me![edit]
Raphael generally considers Mammon to be a troublemaker. When Mammon claimed to have an idea to help settle a dispute between Raphael's and Lucifer's teams in Lesson 66-7, Raphael responded it seemed "time to take out [his] spear." He didn't do so, but instead was tricked by Mammon alongside the others.
Raphael was surprised the ropes Mammon used to tie everyone together were spelled in an elaborate way, and commented that back in the Celestial Realm, his pranks had always been "much more childish." He mentioned one prank being hollowing out the pages of a book to put a frog inside, which Lucifer commented was a trick Raphael fell for.
Later in Lesson 69, he let Mammon see his room in Purgatory Hall, but only after Mammon begged. He still insisted Mammon not touch anything, and when Mammon joked that he must not want his germs all over his stuff, Raphael agreed that was one reason, but also didn't trust him to not break something.

As Satan was never an angel, he is the only one of the seven brothers Raphael did not already know from the Celestial Realm. Raphael was also able to teach Satan enough moves to shoot the needed action scene for a film they were making.

Raphael and Asmodeus don't interact much during his time as a RAD exchange student, and the two currently don't share any Cards together. However, a still angelic Asmodeus mentioned in Lesson 44-3 that after he went to a party in the Human World, Raphael told him that was a "wicked and immoral thing to do." Asmodeus then hid to avoid being lectured by him, but heard from Mammon that Raphael was looking for him with his spear in hand.

When Beelzebub was still an angel, Raphael did not seem to care for him much. As Beelzebub told MC in Lesson 45-18, he destroyed things by accident often. This is something that Raphael would always "make some sort of sarcastic remark about." His behavior toward Beelzebub seems neutral after becoming a RAD exchange student, though the two don't spend much time together. Raphael did enjoy trying out a sticker photo booth with Beelzebub in the Devilgram Let's Take Photos!.

[edit]
For an angel from the Celestial Realm, Raphael surprisingly seems to be in favor of supporting a demon like Diavolo's dreams for harmony between the three worlds.
In the chat Raphael's "Ideal World", Raphael was asked by MC what his ideal world would be if he were to use the Stained Glass Flower to bring it about. Raphael responded that he wanted to see a world where "Diavolo has brokered peace between the three worlds." He also said that "being able to witness the realization of [Diavolo's] goal would be something else."
Raphael also seems to get along well enough with Diavolo as an individual, and was willing to do him a favor by helping pick out and wrap some candy as presents in the Devilgram Halloween Presents.

In Lesson 66-17, Raphael became enraged when a chimera attacked Simeon, and swiftly sought vengeance. Obey Me![edit]
Despite living together at Purgatory Hall, Raphael and Solomon don't spend much time together. As explained by Simeon in Lesson 69-9, this is partly due to Raphael being an early riser, while Solomon is a night owl. In the same lesson, the two spent a rare moment they had at Purgatory Hall together folding laundry. Or as Simeon pointed out, Solomon poorly folded laundry that Raphael then re-folded.
Lesson 69-11 was when Raphael tried Solomon's cooking for the first time, which he called "superb" and genuinely enjoyed.

Thirteen[edit]

Obey Me![edit]
At the start, while Raphael didn't seem to outright hate Thirteen, he clearly was not fond of her either. He may not have said as much, but as Thirteen noted in Lesson 65-9, his dislike at being on her team for the RAD Festival was written all over his face. Accidentally getting caught in the crossfire of Thirteen's "Sticky Sticky Spiderweb Bazooka Number 12" shortly after didn't help matters, even if he avoided being hit.
The two worked together well enough during the first festival task, though their team end up losing. By the latter half of the second task in Lesson 68, however, both they and MC were able to pull together as a team and come out the victors. Outside of this mandatory time together, however, they aren't often in each other's company.

In the Devilgram Connecting Through Fangol, Raphael wasn't exactly enthusiastic when Mephistopheles asked him to write part of an article about Fangol for the RAD Newspaper, though he ended up agreeing. However, he was able to cooperate with Mephistopheles when MC acted as their go-between.
Michael[edit]
See also Michael's POV
Obey Me![edit]
Raphael works under Michael, attending his needs closely. In Lesson 65-2, Raphael was offended if MC incorrectly guessed that he was Michael, and referred to the other angel as a "socially inept weirdo." However, it is expressed in his character introduction video that he respects Michael and is "the only one to truly understand him."
According to Belphegor in Lesson 56-1, a large part of Raphael's sour attitude that the other brothers have complained about is due to the stress of attending Michael's needs, which tend to be difficult to fulfill with very little reward.
